Hi All, what is the best engine to replace for a 601? I have seen audi TT and motorcycle engines used. I am a newbie so any suggestions would be great. Also what about suspension? any ones that work better than others?

If you want to replace the one already in there, get a rebuilt one from Trabantwelt. It will arrive in three shipping boxes. Assembly is pretty straightforward.

What happened to the engine already in the car? Is it not useable anymore?

If you put another engine in of a different type, you will also have to replace the gearbox, suspension, and possibly the steering. This could be a bigger, more expensive job than putting a rebuilt Trabant engine in it.

I would suggest you find a Trabi with the 4 stroke inline 4 engine from the very late production. It is a much more suitable platform for more power and engine swaps. From there on you can swap a more powerful 4 cyl from golf models and even have 5 speed gearbox.

Why do you want to change the engine if the existing one is OK? I don't get this. The car is either 2 stroke 600cc or 4 stroke 1.1 and anything else well why not just change the car then. If you want a 1600cc car go buy a Ford or something similar. I have seen someone shoehorn a Skoda 1600 engine into a Trabant but for me that's not a Trabant anymore.

Why not keep it east german and fit a wartburg engine from a 353 (not cheap or easy though )
