The real "old" engines used the 33:1 mix. 50:1 is what is recommended in later engines. I typically run 40:1.

Actually I think these ratios don't really apply anymore now that we have better modern oils. I'm not sure why. I have used Opti-2 100:1 in engines requiring as much as a 25:1 mixture and about 10 tank fulls in my Trabant with no ill effects.

33:1 was probably back in the day when 2 stroke oil was plan SAE-30 weight engine oil.

Really old American 2 stroke engines used standard SAE 30 weight engine oil and some ran as much as a 16:1 ratio.

Run 40:1 it is just a little bit oil more but better for bearings.

My engineer buddy in Brandenburg says always 33:1 no matter what and no short trips.

i have a manual that says

    33 1/3 : 1 (from engine No. 65/66 - 50 : 1)

    my engine number is 5b1244613

is my engine number before 65/66? this is what is confusing me

    From 22-4-1974 65-001 515 P65/P66 with needle bearing 50:1.
In 09-1976 they have changed numbering engines.
Also at that point 50:1 mixture allowed.

    5B-300 000.
    6B-300 001.

    5-normal engine.
    6-hycomat engine.

The instructions which came with my mikuni carb say fully synthetic 1:100 if your stock engine up to 26 hp has needle bearings manufactured after 04/76.
