I found this 1980 601 in the Los Angeles area. The owner is asking around $3500 and it is not registered in the State. Says the battery needs to be charged and it is good to go, lot's of recent maintenance. Do you think I should go for it? I would have to sell my 1986 535I in order to afford this Trabant. I wonder if that is the one that used to have the Calif.plate ZWICKAU on it? Or maybe DDR-CAR? Ask the seller. I think he used to be on this forum.

He said he brought it in around 2011 and was not able to register it so it has been sitting.

Can't be any kind of legal reason, since 1) it had to have a clear title to be imported into the States, unless it was done illegally... 2) if it has brakes, seat belts, lights, horn, etc. it should pass motor vehicle inspection and 3) mine got registered, insured and inspected in Massachusetts, which is even stricter than California.

There is an aluminium plate on firewall with chassis number and year of manufacture . The important bit though is the actual chassis number which is on a steel tag welded behind the fuel tank. Check they are both there ( and read the same) and match the title or foreign logbook

Also trabis don't like sitting unused . Get it started and see if brakes pull to one side. If they do you will probably have to fit all new wheel cylinders ( easy enough but a bargaining point)

If you could get it registered it is probably a pretty fair deal, But if it were me, I would probably start negotiating at $2500, and be happy to get it around $3000

Guys, I know what to check for lol. There is a problem in California with CARB. It is what held me up on my 89 Trabi.

    Polishing up nicely.
Fixed the fuel problem but it still runs like it only has 5hp. Will check plugs and swap carburetor. If not that then I will pull the heads and exhaust manifold.

Low power? make sure both cylinders are running! A dead cylinder will have a cool spark plug and cylinder head after you shut it off, the running cylinder will be hot or at least warm.

Keri, you are right, it's only hot on the passenger side. I will check plugs to start.

Found some new plugs in the trunk, tried them and it runs great.
