    Thanks for posting.
Ad says 1980, serial tag reads 1990
    Photos show Hungarian plates.
The ad says Elmwood Park, very close to O'Hare airport.
I'm in the general area if anyone needs help to look at the car.

For $7800 you could import a better one.

OK, visited the car. It's real and the seller (Manny) is a really nice guy. The car is not perfect, but is very restorable.
The money is too much for me, but to each his own.

Did he import it himself or just happen to acquire it somehow?

He imported lots of cars (about 70) and is starting to "thin down". The Trabant came from Hungary. He has a large number of very unique French, British and German cars. Selling everything, but just a touch out of my price range.

He's not going to get 7800 for it. 5K, maybe.

    Well, you just never know.....
As I was leaving, two guys pulled up in a VW CC to also look at the 1.1.
Manny sent me an email and said they are buying it.
Whatever floats your boat I guess.

    Well, good for him.

There will always be somebody....just gotta find them. I would think the 1.1 would be an interesting vehicle to an early watercooled VW enthusiast.

Was contacted by Manny via email.
Turns out, the car did not sell and he wanted to let me know it was running and ready to go.
If someone really wanted a 1.1, this would be a project (being nice).
It's still available via the link above.

I see that the link is no longer active. Do you know if he sold it? I have been looking for a 1.1 for years.

I had a chance to buy two 1991 Trabants about 6 years ago. One was a 1.1 and the other one was a 2 stroke. One was the wagon version. Both for $2500 each! When the guy who ordered these cars found out they had to be 30 years old before he could register them, he bailed on the importer. I went to the DMV and they told me they were too "new". Imagine that, a cleaner burning 1.1 version disqualified.

I couldn't register them in Tennessee either because they were not 30 years old. So he was selling them for what he had in them.

I ended up telling the guy if he planned on bringing in any more that met the 30 year requirement, I'd be interested. Four days later he sent me an email telling me he was going to be putting in a shipment. This time making sure they were at least 30 years old.

My biggest mistake was not buying these cars. I could have easily found some older VINs and just epoxied them to the frames and nobody other here would have been the wiser.

Update, the car is real but be careful.
Price started at $7,800, then upped it to $8,200.
    Now it's at $8,800.

Not going into detail, but my contact and posting about the car has not been of value.
Falls into the "no good deed goes unpunished" category

How would I go about finding a vendor to locate and import one? I have imported a 601 myself back in 2012, but I was living abroad making the process a lot easier. It looks like there might be a firm in Florida that does this?
