Mithras, try this: https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/search.html?damageUnrepaired=NO_DAMAGE_UNREPAIRED&isSearchRequest=true&makeModelVariant1.makeId=24200&maxFirstRegistrationDate=1975-12-31&maxPowerAsArray=KW&minFirstRegistrationDate=1965-01-01&minPowerAsArray=KW&scopeId=C
Trabant 601, from 1965 to 1975. You can translate it to English, if that is easier.

Thank you kindly. I've read the buyers guides, and hopefully I can narrow down to some workable vehicles that can be driven as is or repaired with my limited knowledge set. Some of these seem like they'd be ideal for more experienced mechanics. but some might suit my novice skill level.

Don't suppose there are any basic things you'd look out for, Roger (or anyone else)? I've read the buyers guide, but being new, maybe there some basic "if it says this, stay away; if it says that, don't worry, it's a fifteen minute fix and a fifty dollar part" type stuff?
Realize this is a huge question, so no worries if it's too much to explain. Just thought I'd ask.

I think most will agree, rust is your biggest foe (as with many cars).
Rust is much like rats, see some and you know there's plenty more hidden.
As with all collector cars, the term "rust free" is likely the most over used phrase.
This is why having the capability of an "eyes on" inspection is important.
Like Roger said, the mechanical stuff is easy and parts are amazingly available (overseas shipping being the only PITA).
My .02, YMMV
