I need to post some pictures, but thought I should post a journal entry today about what not to do when buying Trabi parts in Germany.
I just got back from a quick trip to Germany where I was able to go to the Trabant Welt store and stock up on a few parts that I needed to finish up my P50 resto project.
I found out that it is not a good idea try to bring a suitcase full of spare parts in your carry-on bag (especially right after a terrorist attack). I had in my bag: 2 headlights, carburetor, ignition coils, cables, bulbs, and a few other goodies stuck in my bag with all my clothes. When you run those things through an x-ray machine, it looks am awful lot like a suitcase bomb. To make matters worse, the backpack I was carrying is the same one that I use to ho hunting, and apparently, I had gun powder residue on that bag. So every time I had to go through any sort of security, I was flagged and basically strip searched. I didn't get frustrated though, it actually made me feel a little at ease about traveling, because I knew that they were not taking any chances.
I wish I had my camera out though to take a picture of the x-ray...it looked pretty creepy.
Also, on my trip I went to Autoschonbezuege-Werksverkauf and had the full interior of my car redone with original fabric and design. I can't wait to get it in and post some pictures. Side note, they don't really like to check a giant box as luggage, but they did.
Pictured are my box and suitcase bomb.

Sweet! My wife ordered a bunch of parts (new sills) for my Christmas present. So hopefully I'm going to start the restoration this winter.
By the way, what was it like over in Germany with the hoards of refugees taking over the country?
I've seen some scary videos on YouTube..
