“Blue Menace”
A cyclekart built by Team Salvage I in Salt Lake City Utah. Car was built in a carport with 75% of the car being used or salvaged items. (75% being a completely made up number mind you)
Inspiration car is the 1935 Austin 7 side valve special. None of the Austin specials ever really looked the same, so a variation of many were included in this one to snag just the right spirit of the cars.
Total cost of the car originally: 800 bucks.
Current Weight: 249 lbs.
Width Front: 35"
Width rear: 34"
Wheelbase: 67"
The real name of the car is "wheels Up." Named by my wife as it was built for her. It is a handicapped accessible car. Throttle is on the right finger and the brake pedal is the right foot. (it was built for someone without a left leg...)
The rear body piece is vintage and came from a local racing legend who's now passed. He gave it to me and said "you better make it look good kid." Sadly, he never saw the legend she'd become.
The forward body consists of 8 different scrap pieces of fiberglass, lovingly spliced together over months to form one unique piece. It would be impossible to make the front body in a mold. Two of the parts in the front body were actually the top of an old fiberglass boat. (A 1957 Skagit 20 Express cruiser) The upper humps in the boat top can still be seen in the sides of the body as it sits now.
Frame is 1" x 3" steel rails (1/16" wall) and the inner cockpit is made of bed frames. While lacking in sophisticated framework recreation, she makes up for it with that sexy body.
Various chrome vents came from the stainless steel back cover of a broken water dispenser found in the trash. The side exhaust is really a shop vac hose from the dumpster, an the air intake on the right side was once a 1962 boat horn. The chrome on the rear tail is also from the same water dispenser, bent into shape and coupled at the top with a simple trim end piece from a boat. The 35's on the rear piece, come from a 1959 johnson outboard motor, 35hp.
The front suspension is a version of the original car except is a 5 point system. Placement of various single leaf springs is possible with only 3 bolts allowing for adjustment of stiffness, ride height, etc. It has a whopping 5 Inches of travel. Subsequent modifications over time have settled it to around 4 inches.
The car first appeared in public at Tieton 7, 2019 and ended up in the Egarage.com video numerous times. This was not planned and the car really shouldn't have appeared at all. It was brought along to show only and was not completed. When the car brought for Tieton 7 suffered a brake system failure with no way of fixing it, this little car was pulled out and ran. She did well.
Gearing is #35 Racing Kart chain & split sprockets allowing for simple gear changes in conjunction with a rather snazzy tension device.
Braking system is by MCP.
Paint is Rustoleum Brand: Gloss Sail Blue and Satin Black
The car is quite fast and to date, has reached 57 mph. It is box stock and still one-wheel drive with the use of a thrust bearing on the left wheel.
During the 1st Huntsville Grand Prix 2020, the car was rolled. It has been restored and is fully functional.
There is a current video / walk around of the car as well here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs5exY1Di_w
